The Area Continued To Retain Strategic Importance Being The Byzantine

A Roman town at the foot of Mt. Cucco (Suillum), it controlled the traffic of the Flaminian Way of which one can still see two bridges outside the town. During the Greco-Goth war a battle was fought on the plain between Totila and Narsete. The area continued to retain strategic importance being the Byzantine route between Ravenna and Rome. It was destroyed by Federico II and then the Perugians rebuilt it, in return for their protection. The church of Santa Maria di Scirca gets its name from the spring that supplied the Roman aqueduct. Inside the church are Umbrian frescoes. In this area you can find the school for gliding.
