| Town: Nocera Umbra | |
![]() Founded by the Umbrians (Noukria) on a rocky spur to the right of the river Topino. Its ancient name was Nucera Camellaria and it was a vital stopping place along the Flaminia Way, just where it branches off towards Ancona. When it was invaded by the Visigoths in 410 the inhabitants sought to hide higher up the hill. The Lombards took it over in the late 1500's and entrusted it to their vassal, thus making it into a county. A testimony to their power is the big Lombard necropolis which was discovered just 100 years ago. In the 1200's it was conquered by Perugia, the Guelph state, and then by Foligno, the Ghibbelline one. It was sacked by Frederick II in the mid-1200's. Then it then belonged 1300's to the Trinci family and then it was passed over to the church. Even in the 1500's it was valued for its therapeutic waters, which were commercialised by Bisleri only last century. It also has therapeutic mud from the alkaline clay in the region. Largely medieval in appearance with the tower at the top of the old fort. |
