| Town: Castiglione del Lago | |
![]() It still loks like a fortified town as the Etruscans and then the Romans built it, as a border town between Umbria and Tuscany. The name probably comes from the castle erectet by Frederick II of Svevia : Castello del Leone (castle of the lion) meaning impregnable. It has towers of different forms, particularly worth noticing is the triangular shape keep. Today it is possible to walk along the corridor just inside the walls. The ducal palace belonged to the Baglioni family, where both Machavelli and da Vinci were guests, while offering their technical assistance for the region. Subsequently, another Perugian noble, Ascanio della Corgna, cardinal and patron of the arts, transformed the tower house into a palazzo and joined it to the Svevia castle. The house and tower have some frescoes from the Umbrian school. |
