La Chiesa - Museo con Affreschi di Benozzo Gozzoli
The complex is made up of the Church of San Francesco ( XIVsec .), the Art Gallery, the Lapidary Museum, the Cellar of the Friars and the exhibition spaces for temporary exhibitions.
The church, now disused, contains numerous paintings on the whole representing an interesting overview of the Umbrian figurative culture between XIV and XVI century, of particular importance to the Story of the life of St. Francis by Benozzo Gozzoli (1452) and a Nativity by Perugino (1503). Also are to be attributed to Gozzoli the frescoes in the chapel of San Girolamo (1450-1452), in the right aisle.
The Art Gallery, located in the rooms of the convent, presents works from San Francesco and other churches in the area. Nicola Liberatore, Antoniazzo Romano (XV century) and the painter Francesco Melanzio from Montefalco (XV century) are among the artists represented.
The striking Lapidary, placed in the crypt below the apse, features between the different pieces a large Roman statue of Hercules.
The expansion of exhibition space, opened April 13, 2006, represents an important milestone and makes the Museum Complex of St. Francis's first museum of history of the Umbria region to have its internal space dedicated to contemporary art exhibitions.
The ancient cellars have been set up with materials of the eighteenth and nineteenth century related to the processing of the grapes and making wine.
