Lago Trasimeno Passignano Sul Trasimeno
A happy combination of nature and history, of art and folklore, Passignano offers the visitor art and thousand-year-old architecture, interesting sporting and bathing attractions and events typical of the area, such as the “ Palio delle Barche” (Race of the Boats). The surrounding hills offer a visit to the remains of the Villa Romana of the Quarantaia and the antique Cassero del Castello d i Monteruffiano; the encircling woods offer relaxing and peaceful bird - watching. Also the 16th century villa of Pischiello, the Torre di Fiume and the old Capuchin monastery are worth visiting, as is the small village of Castel Rigone, not forgetting the unspoilt enchanting island, Isola Minore.
Passignano is a historic and tourist centre, originally Roman. Before 1000 it was given by Berengario d' Ivrea to the Bourbon del Monte but again because of its strategic position on the lake, it was fought over by Arezzo, Florence and Perugia. The highest part of the town is medieval and has spectacular views.
Through the European Community it has been accorded special status as a centre of observation and scientific survey of the lake.
Castel Rigone
Was a castle from the 1200's, as well as a fortress and lookout, which is now a tourist attraction, because of its views of the lake and the pine forests of il parco della Rigonella. The church of the Madonna dei Miracoli is from the 1500's and has some frescoes from the Umbrian school.
Preggio
Is a picturesque medieval fortressed town. Nearby are the remains of an old Etruscan/Umbrian village.
