The name is from medieval times "castrum plebis' which is the fortress of the town or parish in the eighth century, from which the town then developed. Federico II stayed here with friends. It was Ghibelline township and fought against Perugia, which set as an imposition for Pieve to cobblestone the main square. Is an especially attractive city as you con see 3 lakes from the top of the hill: Trasimeno, Montepulciano and Chiusi, the geological remains of the ancient Lake Tiberino. The famous painters Pietro Vannucci called Il Perugino and Antonio Circignani called Pomarancio were both born here. Architecturally it has a splendid 40 metre tower and some great examples of Romanesque and Gothic buildings. In various churches you can find the Adoration of the Magi by Perugino in the Chiesa di S. Maria Mercede. You can also see the recently restored " Deposition" by the same author. The fort was built in the 1300's and is where Cesare Borgia had his rivals strangled for plotting against him.
On the border between Umbria and Tuscany, and not far from Latium, Città della Pieve overlooks the Valdichiana and Lake Trasimeno. The picturesque landscape has been the inspiration of the native Pietro Vannucci, also known as “Il Perugino”, who left here several of his works such as the celebrated “Adorazione dei Magi”. The historical centre highlights an urban structure typical of the first half of the 13th century, with strong influences from Siena, and evidence of subsequent renaissance and neoclassical features. Among the most notable historical and artistic beauties present there are the Cathedral, which contains works by Perugino, Pomarancio and Giambologna; the Palazzo della Corgna, the Oratorio di Santa Maria dei Bianchi, the Oratorio di San Bartolomeo and the churches of Santa Maria dei Servi and San Pietro.
