On the old crossroads between the ancient Umbrians and Etruscans it became a Roman town called Pitulum. It was destroyed by the Goths and rebuilt under the name of Fratta in the 9th century by the sons of Uberto according to the wishes of the Marquis of Tuscany. It was autonomous until 1200 when it belonged to Perugia. A fort was built there which had Braccio Fortebraccio as a prisoner, liberating him was an expensive deal, which meant the end of the feudal families of Montone. The Pope in 1500 ceded it to the Vitelli family of Città di Castello. In the 1600's it was besieged by the Florentines, but it resisted and actually hunted them away before finally being passed.
