Among Other Things, Contains An Interesting Collection Of Seashells
Second in importance in Umbria, the Città di Castello Art Gallery is set up inside the Renaissance Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera when, in 1912, the painter Elia Volpi from Città di Castello gave it to City Hall.
Remarkable example of a princely residence of the first half of the sixteenth century, the building's façade is entirely decorated with graffiti made by Gherardi, said Doceno, designed by Vasari. The 21 rooms are works made from 1300 until the last century with fine examples of Raphael ("Banner of the Holy Trinity" about 1503, ex voto for the plague), Luca Signorelli ("Martyrdom of St. Sebastian" 1497-98) , Domenico Ghirlandaio, Andrea Della Robbia, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Antonio Vivarini, Raffaellino del Colle, Pomarancio.
In the new wing of the gallery's works have found place three grants: the plaster casts of Elmo Palaces, a sculptor who worked from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the collection of bronzes by Bruno Bartoccini, sculptor of the second half of the twentieth century , and Ruggiero Collection, which collects a dozen paintings by masters of the twentieth century.
In the halls of the basement art gallery houses the Shell Museum which has three rooms with 40 large windows, each dedicated to a different theme.
